Grenfell Coat of ArmsWelcome to the Grenfell Family History Website

[Incorporating the Grenfell One-Name Study]

An internet resource for everyone interested in the history of the Grenfell family.

The study into the Grenfell family name really began in the 1980's when Alison Stephen in Victoria, Australia and Arthur Coomb in Cornwall, England were carrying out independent research. Alison registered the Grenfell name - No. 1238 - with the Guild of One-Name Studies in 1997 and after meeting in Truro in 1998 we decided to collaborate and pool our resources. In September 2002 the original Grenfell Family History website was launched and in 2017 the current one, associated with the Guild's Members's Websites Project, was created.

The Family Trees section on the website, which was updated in December 2021, currently contains 4245 persons divided into 1473 families.

The purpose of the site is to further interest in the Grenfell family name and the objective of the One-Name Study is to research all occurrences of the name GRENFELL and its variants, GRENFIELD, GRINFIELD, GREENFILL, GRINFILL, GRINFIELD, GRANFELL  etc.

Databases are being compiled to include indexes to Civil Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths, Parish Records of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, Overseas records, the IGI and published indexes of Wills etc. Wherever possible it is hoped that we shall be able to include many of these on the website.

There are errors, not too many of them I hope, but if you find an error please let me know so that I can correct it. As with all data of this nature it should only be used as a guide for further research into primary sources and no guarantee can be given or implied as to the accuracy of any information on the site or the data included.

The site is being continuously updated - feel free to browse, but please call back for the latest data. Your comments, corrections and additions will be very welcome and we hope that we can add your name to the list of Researchers.

I appreciate that at present the site is still UK orientated, but hope that researchers throughout the world will continue to provide us with information to broaden its base.

Please contact me, Arthur Coomb, in Cornwall by the Contact link above.
